Scientists in New Mexico turn dead birds into drones in an unconventional approach to wildlife research.
A team from the New Mexico Mining and Mining Institute Technology in Socorro is taking birds that have been preserved through taxidermy and turn them into drones to study flight.
Dr. Mostafa Hassanalian, a professor of mechanical engineering leading the project, found that the artificial mechanical birds had not given the results he was looking for.
“We came up with this idea that we can take…dead birds and turn it into a drone,” he said. ‘It’s all there… we reverse engineer.’
Taxidermy bird drones, currently being tested in a purpose-built cage at the university, can be used to better understand flock formation and flight patterns. That, in turn, can be applied to the aviation industry, Hassanalian said.
“If we learn how these birds manage … energy with each other, we can apply (that) in the future aviation industry to save more energy and save more fuel,” he said.
Brenden Herkenhoff, a Ph.D. student at New Mexico Tech, focuses his research on coloration and flight efficiency.
While many think of a bird’s color as a way to attract mates or use camouflage, Herkenhoff is studying how color affects flight efficiency.
“We have conducted experiments and determined that for our fixed-wing aircraft, the application of certain colors can change the efficiency of the flight. And the same is true for birds, we think,” he said.
The current taxidermy bird prototype flies for a maximum of only 20 minutes, so the next stage is figuring out how to make it fly longer and testing it in the wild among live birds, Hassanalian said.
The research rings are identical to those of Gen Z.the birds are not real‘ conspiracy theory that took off on social media.
According to the parody social movement, the birds do not exist and are actually replicas of drones installed by the US government to spy on Americans.
