Arguably the biggest surprise in the most recent Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Super Mario RPG for the switch. It is a remake of Square’s 1996 RPG with updated graphics and 3D cinematics.
As excited as the fans were, another person who was equally surprised by this announcement was Chihiro Fujioka, one of the original directors of this classic. In a brief exchange with a fan on social media, Fujioka revealed that he was not involved in this updated version, adding that he was “very surprised” but also incredibly “pleased” by the announcement.
Chihiro Fujioka: “Oh my gosh, finally! Both the art and music have been improved wonderfully! I’m really looking forward to seeing how the feel of various mini-games and courses evolves!”
Fujioka also mentioned that he was “waiting” for the game’s release on November 17, so maybe he’ll even check it out himself.
In an interview this past February, Fujioka actually talked about how he’d love to follow up on Super Mario RPG and maybe even make it his last game. This is what he had to say (via MinnMax YouTube channel):
Chihiro Fujioka: “Yeah, I’d love to make one… yeah, so in my career I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I’d really like my last game to be another Mario RPG, if possible…”
You can read more about Fujioka’s idea for another game in our previous story. In addition to Super Mario RPG, Fujioka became the head of AlphaDream, best known during its years of operation for the Mario and Luigi series.
