Surat Police arrested a Bangalore man on Wednesday and recovered 978 counterfeit Indian Rs 500 notes with a face value of Rs 4.89 lakhs.
The police identified the defendant as Michael Raiwan aka Rahul Fernandes (39), who runs a floor mill. Fernandes was taken to Surat and handed over to the Amroli police for further investigation.
The arrest is related to the fact that the Amroli police arrested Shantilal Mevada, a resident of Chhaprabhata (35), on April 15. On April 14, Mevada had visited a paan shop to buy. The store’s owner, Ashok Patel, identified a note given to him as a fake. Patel immediately called the police and within minutes, a team of Amroli police arrived and caught Mevada. Police recovered 32 counterfeit Rs 500 notes with a face value of Rs 16,000 from the Mevada house.
Mevada claimed that he got the notes from his cousin Vishnu Mevada (36). Police seized 149 counterfeit 500 rupee notes and 32 counterfeit 50 rupee notes from his home. During the interrogation, the name of Fernandes came up.
surat Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar said: “The quality of the fake notes is good and they are difficult to identify.”
