The Bandra-Versova sea link will be named after Swatantrya Veer Savarkar: Shinde

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Monday that the Bandra-Versova sea link under construction will be named after Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.

After returning from Delhi on Sunday evening, where he attended the inauguration of the new Parliament and the 140th anniversary of the birth of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar at the Maharashtra Sadan, Shinde said: “On the occasion of Savarkar’s birth anniversary, which will now be celebrated as Swatantrya Veer Gaurav Divas, our government has taken a decision to name Bandra Versova Sea Link as Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Samudra Setu (Sea Link).”

The announcement came days after Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared a letter he wrote to the CM on March 16, requesting to name Bandra-Versova Sealink after freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) in honor of the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Shinde also announced that those who have performed unparalleled bravery in different fields will also be honored with the Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Bravery Award in the vein of the Central Government’s bravery awards.

“In view of Savarkar’s bravery, the Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Bravery Award will be launched through the state government,” Shinde said.

The Maharashtra government celebrated the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar at the Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi for the first time on Sunday.

The event held at the official state guest house in Delhi was attended by Shinde, Fadnavis and Parliament Shinde-led Deputies Shiv Sena. The state government had earlier announced that May 28 will be celebrated as a “Swatantrya Veer Gaurav Divas” in the state.

“The 140th birth anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the first revolutionary freedom fighter who sowed the spirit of armed revolution in the Indian freedom struggle, was celebrated today with great enthusiasm and joy at the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi. On this occasion, I, along with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sen-BJP Parliamentarians and ministers paid our respects to Swatantra Veer Savarkar. It is with great pride that the birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar, the revolutionary pioneer of the Indian freedom struggle, is being celebrated today at the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi,” CM Shinde said in a tweet.

Referring to the inauguration of the Parliament building by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shinde said, “It is a source of pride for all Marathis that the country’s new Parliament building is inaugurated on this auspicious day. But some people have tried to add salt to that program by boycotting it,” Shinde said.

He also said that the common man will get justice in the new Parliament building and this building will definitely do the job of strengthening Indian democracy.
