July is here, which means pub gardens, bare legs and evenings spent drinking vino in the park. But after all that partying and soaking up the sun, what could be better than relaxing on the sofa and sticking on a stellar TV series or film?
Thankfully, Netflix has a bumper crop of new, binge-worthy shows to see us through. From a gripping eight-part anthology series exploring the world’s weirdest news stories to Lena Dunham’s return to the small screen, here’s what we’ll be tuning into this month.
The Sandman (Release date: 3rd July)
Tom Sturridge returns as Dream of the Endless in the second series of this DC comic adaptation, attempting to save himself, his kingdom and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything…
All the Sharks (Release date: 4th July)
Thought they’d come up with every weird concept for a reality show already? Well, you were wrong. All the Sharks is a new competition in which shark experts compete to find and photograph the most sharks, hoping to win a $50,000 prize for their chosen marine charity. Our verdict: barmy but entertaining.
Trainwreck: The Real Project X (Release date: 8th July)
Remember that crazy film, Project X, about a guy who put a public invite to his house party on Facebook and ended up causing a massive riot? Well, this is the real thing. In 2012, a Dutch teenager ‘accidentally’ created a public event for her 16th birthday, and, inspired by their love of Project X the film, her pals made it go viral. Despite warnings, police paid little attention – until the party exploded into a full-blown riot.
The Real Project X is part of an eight-part anthology series, Trainwreck, which explores eight media-dominating events. Also releasing this July is a documentary about the cult of American Apparel, another about the storming of Area 51 and the one we’re most excited for: a deep dive into the doomed reality TV series about moms moonlighting as private investigators.
Too Much (Release date: 10th July)
After her Emmy-winning smash-hit Girls, Lena Dunham makes a triumphant return to television in Too Much, a 10-episode series about moving to London and falling in love with a Brit. With a star-studded cast featuring the likes of Adwoa Aboah, Andrew Scott, Emily Ratajkowski and Stephen Fry (Hack’s Megan Stalter and The White Lotus’ Will Sharpe lead), this is sure to be one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the year.
Apocalypse in the Tropics (Release date: 14th July)
The team behind Oscar-nominated doc The Edge of Democracy return with this decade-long journey through the spiritual and political upheaval of Brazil. Director Petra Costa gains extraordinary access to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, former President Jair Bolsonaro and the nation’s magnetic televangelist Silas Malafaia, for a dramatic inside look at the turbulent nation’s past, present and future.
Conversations with a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes (Release date: 30th July)
One of the greatest manhunts in New York City history comes to life in this gripping three-part series about the race to find the infamous .44-calibre killer. Newly unearthed recordings offer rare insight into his twisted psyche, revealing what was going through his mind as he unleashed a reign of terror in the late 1970s. Fans of true crime will lap this up.
