The epic 125-mile beach roadtrip with UK’s ‘best beaches’ and fossil-filled bays

Brits love a road trip, whether it be the North Coast 500, Causeway Coastal Route or the stunning Lake District. Now, though, a 125-mile road trip along a beautiful stretch of British coastline has been shared online, and looks incredible.

Travel expert page Explore The UK posted the trip itinerary, which includes a host of Dorset beaches, on Facebook over the weekend. Spanning 125 miles of the Jurassic Coast, the Dorset Beaches road trip is sure to impress.

The Jurassic Coast itself spans 185 million years of geological history, coastal erosion having exposed an almost continuous sequence of rock formation over prehistoric periods. At different times, the area has seen desert, shallow tropical sea and marsh, while today fossilised remains of various creatures that lived there have been preserved in the rocks and can be viewed by visitors.

Explore The UK said: “This Dorset Beaches Road Trip is perfect for a sun-soaked seaside holiday, fossil hunting, cliff walks, or just soaking in the epic coastal scenery.”

First up is Mudeford Sandbank, a former fishing village in Christchurch, fronting water on two sides with Christchurch Harbour and the sandy Avon Beach. From there, road trippers would head to Hengistbury Head Beach and onto the famous Bournemouth Beach, which itself spans seven miles of coastline.

Bournemouth Beach is described on the local tourism website as nestled beneath a “magnificent” cliff line and subject to its own micro-climate, which produces “some of the warmest sea temperatures of the UK” and “stunning views” across the Isle of Wight and the Purbecks. It was also ranked as the number one beach in the UK by TripAdvisor last year, making it a must-see for many tourists.

Onwards from Bournemouth is Sandbanks Beach in Poole and then Swanage Beach, before travellers move on to Kimmeridge Bay.

Then tourists can experience the famed Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch noted for its striking geological formation and dramatic scenery. Traveller blogger SolarPoweredBlonde said the beach was “one of the best” in Dorset, with an “amazing” blue colour in the sea and scenic walks along the cliffs.

Bordering the rock is Man O’ War Bay, a sand and fine pebble beach to the east of Durdle Door, which is all part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site that begins at Studland in Dorset and stretches to Exmouth in Devon.

Be warned, Man O’ War is accessible via a steep footpath and there are no amenities available on the beach itself.

After those, road trippers will journey on to Weymouth Beach before stopping off at Church Ope Cove in Portland.

Then it’s on to Chesil Beach, West Bay and Charmouth Beach, before finishing up in Lyme Regis to finish the trip.

Featuring some gorgeous spots, this road trip is sure to impress and make some great memories.
