The new two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee has been revealed and it’s getting a plug-in hybrid variant.

Earlier this year, Jeep showcased the Grand Cherokee L, a new three-row, full-size SUV that slots below Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in the company’s lineup. Now it’s little brother’s turn.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee two-row SUV comes to market bringing the looks and appeal of its three-row sibling, but in a smaller package. An electrified version, Grand Cherokee 4xe, will be the first of its kind in the Jeep lineup and join the Renegade 4xe, Wrangler 4xe and Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid product portfolio.

Jeep will offer the 2022 Grand Cherokee in Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve trims.

Part of the fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee family, the new two-row version has a completely redesigned exterior that includes a lowered and tapered roof, wider and larger seven-slot grille, an elongated hood, active grille shutters and vertical pillar spoilers.

Its track is widened over the dimensions of the previous generation and up to 21-inch wheels are available.

The new Grand Cherokee is 11.4 inches shorter than the Grand Cherokee L and its wheelbase has been shortened by five inches. Its dimensions allow for more passenger and cargo space than in the previous generation.

Jeep will offer the model for the first time with a gloss black roof on Grand Cherokee Overland, and make it standard on Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, Summit and Summit Reserve trim levels.

Buyers will be able to choose between three powertrains for their Grand Cherokee: a standard 3.6-liter V6 rated at 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the available 5.7-liter V8 rated at 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, and an optional combination of a 400-volt battery pack, two electric motors and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that achieves 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

The V6 offers a towing capacity of up to 6,200 miles and an estimated range of more than 500 miles. V8 models are able to tow 1,000 pounds more. Grand Cherokee 4xe will have a 6,000-pound maximum tow rating.

Jeep is giving this take on the Grand Cherokee familiar drivetrain options. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II are available, as are a Quadra-Lift air suspension and drive mode selector.

Grand Cherokee 4xe’s powertrain allows for an estimated 25 miles of all-electric range, helping the model reach 57 MPGe.

The Trail Rated Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is capable of fording up to 24 inches of water. Models outfitted with the air suspension can achieve 11.3 inches of ground clearance.

Grand Cherokee Tailhawk models add sway bar disconnect, trail speed control technology, high-strength steel skid plates, red tow hooks, 18-inch wheels on all-terrain tires and a glare-proof hood decal.

Tailhawk 4xe allows for slightly less maneuverability with just 10.9 inches of ground clearance. It gets blue exterior accents denoting its plug-in hybrid status.
The SUV’s interior matches the quality of that in the Grand Cherokee L, setting a new bar for a two-row Grand Cherokee. The emphasis is on finely crafted surfaces and includes knurled metal and genuine wood in the highest trim levels.
