The story of betrayal behind biggest insider trading case

The series debuted in the number one spot on Apple Podcasts, showing Australian audiences are still in love with true crime. Grigg says the pod firmly plays within the true crime genre, but the crime is just the hook to tell a fascinating story of betrayal.

“Insider trading is the vehicle to tell the story and to put some ballast around the narrative, but really, it’s a story about [Kamay and Hill’s] relationship, and how they first cooked up this plan. It was a really bulletproof plan to start with, then at the first available opportunity, Lukas Kamay betrays his friend.”

Grigg says The Sure Thing felt like a natural first podcast outing for The Fin, as all the major players involved in the plot, police chase and arrest were still around to give first hand accounts of the story.

Lap Phan, who produced and edited the series, says the production began with a two day interview with Chris Hill, which forms the main arc of the podcast.

“He gave us six or seven hours of interviews, and he was quite emotional, he was quite honest. It was a visceral response that he gives us when he’s talking about getting caught and having to talk to his family, having to fess up and get a lawyer.”

Grigg says Hill was very keen to tell his side of the story, as a way to have people look at what he did a little bit differently.

“He’s said from the start he has done the wrong thing, he was stupid. And part of his motivation in doing this is to prevent others from making the same stupid mistake that he did,” he says.

“We should also add we asked Lukas Kamay to appear on the show,” adds Phan. “He chose not to.”
