There are rules to being Royal. And even if they vary slightly from country to country, it’s no surprise that royal women turn to similar designers – and often the same ones.
It is true that the Spanish and Swedish are a little more relaxed than their British counterparts.
But women from pretty much all the European monarchies find their styles match from time to time, as these pictures show…
Beulah London ‘Ahana’ Dress
Both Princess Beatrice and Sophie Winkleman, who is wife to Lord Fredrick Windsor, turned up to The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in 2022 in Beulah.
The design they chose was ‘Ahana Chambre’ but in different colors.
Self-Portrait Maxi Dress
For the premier of A Street Cat Named Bob in London in 2016, Kate wore a £320 crochet off-the-peg maxi dress by Self Portrait.
Three years later, Princess Sofia of Sweden wore the very same dress, but styled differently with a sash and broaches, for a State Banquet in honour of South Korea’s presidential couple at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, South Korea.
Featuring a high neck top in the label’s signature floral crochet, plus a pleated skirt, it’s an ultra-elegant gown and suits the royal style down to the ground
The Vampire’s Wife
Both Kate and Princess Beatrice looked glowing in the same dress.
The emerald dress by designer brand The Vampire’s Wife is made from iridescent silk-chiffon. It features a demure midi length, playful ruffle trim and metallic finish, which makes it ideal for any special occasion.
Kate wore the fitted green number for a tour of Guinness Storehouse in Dublin in 2020. Beatrice wore it for the wedding of popstar Ellie Goulding in August 2019.
Max Mara Blazer
Princess Isabella of Denmark looked like the double of her mother, Princess Mary, in a white Max Mara blazer and matching trousers.
It isn’t uncommon that daughters borrow a few articles of clothing from their mother’s wardrobes, and clearly Princess Isabella is no stranger to doing so.
The Princess wore the white ensemble for her confirmation at Fredensborg Palace Church on April 30, 2022, while Queen Mary wore it for an engagement in Stockholm on May 29, 2017.
Stella McCartney Cape Dress
Meghan Markle dazzled in a £1,148 Stella McCartney navy blue cape dress and matching heels at a concert to mark the late Queen’s 92nd birthday in 2018.
Queen Letizia of Spain wore the same elegant dress, but in an olive green shade, for the Innovation and Design Awards on February 6, 2017 in Alcala de Henares, Spain.
Meghan and Letizia’s number is the ‘Stella’ by Stella McCartney and is designed with a round neck and midi length that is perfect for any royal occasion.
Stella McCartney Off-The-Shoulder Gown
Princess Charlene of Monaco looked dazzling in black tie as she posed for photos on the red carpet of the 2018 Laureus World Sports Awards in the slinky one-shoulder white gown by Stella McCartney.
Queen Maxima of The Netherlands looked equally as radiant when attending the Royal Palace after the annual gala diner for the Diplomatic Corps in the very same dress on April 9, 2019 in Amsterdam.
Vilshenko Embroidered Dress
Both Princess Mary and Princess Charlene looked the picture of elegance in the Vilshenko gown that featured a delicate yet colourful floral design.
Charlene was the first of the two to wear the gown as she attended the annual traditional ‘Pique Nique Monegasque’ in Monaco in 2016, and a year later Mary was pictured in the same number in Tokyo.
Valentino Red Jumpsuit
Princess Charlene of Monaco and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands stole the show when they were pictured wearing the red Valentino One Shoulder Jumpsuit.
While it may have been a bold choice, it certainly paid off for Maxima who was attending the opening of the new season of the Koninklijke orchestra in Amsterdam and Charlene who also wore the look to a Red Cross Gala in Monte-Carlo.
Zimmermann Honour Floral Dress
For the Platinum Jubilee Pageant in London in June last year, Zara Tindall wore a £740 Zimmermann cream floral-print Broderie Anglaise cotton midi dress.
Princess Mary of Denmark wore the same dress when she attended Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s confirmation in August 2019.
Red Carolina Herrera Coat
The Princess of Wales was first spotted wearing the red Carolina Herrera coat while on a royal tour of Canada in 2016, but has been spotted wearing it again on numerous occasions.
And just one month later, Princess Sofia of Spain attended Spain’s National Day military parade on October 12, 2016 wearing the child-sized version of the stunning coat.
Ellie Saab Coral Dress
Ellie Saab is a favoured designer by royal women and we can certainly see why.
Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden looked stunning in a coral number by the designer for the christening of Prince Alexander on September 9, 2016 in Stockholm.
Queen Maxima of the Netherlands also opted for the same lace gown for a visit to the Champalimaud Centre in Portugal on October 11, 2017.
L.K. Bennett. Green Dress
Two royal women looked graceful in 2018 with a flowy, colorful dress by L.K. Bennett.
Princess Sofia of Sweden wore the green gown while attending the Sophiahemmet University’s graduation ceremony at Stockholm City Hall on June 11, 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Whereas Queen Mathilde of Belgium wore the abstract-print dress for a National Day event on July 21, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.
Hugo Boss Pencil Skirt
Having been one of Meghan Markle’s go-to-labels, Hugo Boss did not disappoint with their berry-shaded pencil skirt with its perfect blend of smart and edgy.
The Duchess of Sussex showed exactly how to nail the tonal-blocking trend as she stepped out to an event today dressed in red from head to toe.
Whereas just a day prior, Letizia put her fashionable spin on royal protocol pairing the luxe leather skirt with a classy white button-up blouse.
Belulah London Spotted Dress
They were dubbed unofficial ‘royal sisters’ by the late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld thanks to their strikingly similar appearance and comparable taste in fashion.
So it’s perhaps no surprise that the Princess of Wales appeared to take style cues from Denmark’s Princess Mary again in 2020 – with Kate sporting a deep blue £525 Beulah London gown first spotted on the Australian-born royal a year prior.
Joining her husband Prince William on a visit to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn to mark the 72nd anniversary of the NHS, Kate teamed the outfit with matching heels and drop earrings.
Meanwhile, Mary paired cream heels and hooped earrings with the shirt dress – which features a striking white collar and blue polka dot pattern – during her trip to Indonesia in December 2019.
Sandro’s All-Over Print Dress
These royal women are no strangers to a bold print, and this Sandro All-Over Print Dress proves how effective it can be when done well.
Queen Letizia of Spain wore the bold piece while attending an awards ceremony in Madrid on May 20, 2019, whereas Crown Princess Victoria chose it for a meeting with the World Health Organization in Stockholm on April 10, 2019.
Emilia Wickstead Dress
For the Trooping The Colour parade in 2018, Princess Beatrice wore a pale pink Emilia Wickstead dress with black details and topped it off with a black and white hat by Judy Bentinck.
Some eagle-eyed royal fans might recognise the dress as it was also worn by her auntie, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh to the Royal Ascot Day 1 at Ascot Racecourse on June 19, 2018.
Giambattista Valli Floral Dress
While these royal women may have chosen different accessories, both shone in this Giambattista Valli maxi-length floral dress.
Queen Maxima of the Netherlands donned the modest number at the Tilburg Theater for the Kingsday concert on April 4, 2017, while HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore the same dress to the World Childhood Foundation Thank You Gala on October 3, 2018 in New York City.
Blue Floral Dress
Both the Duchess of Edinburgh and Queen Camilla were spotted wearing the same flower-patterned dress in June last year.
Sophie wore the blue number as she met with well wishers on a walkabout while attending celebrations marking the Platinum Jubilee of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on June 4, 2022 in Bangor.
Whereas Queen Camilla looked elegant in the piece while attending a recording session for The Commonwealth Poetry Podcast.
Dolce and Gabbana Cream Dress
Both Princess Victoria and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece dressed to impress in a beautiful cream Dolce and Gabbana dress with intricate buttoned detail.
Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece wore the number to Derby Day in Epsom in June 2014, while just two days later, Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria wore the exact same style to Princess Leonore’s christening.
Raquel Diniz Red Dress
Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wore the stunning tied-waist Raquel Diniz dress at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in August 28, 2018, and topped it off with a delicate golden broach.
Contrastingly, one year prior, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway wore the dress as she attended the opening of the exhibition ‘Towards the Forest—Knausgaard on Munch’ in Oslo, Norway in May 2017.
Hugo Boss Keyhole Dress
The simple yet effective Hugo Boss dress, which features a pleated skirt and keyhole neckline is the perfect edition to any royal wardrobe.
Princess Sofia of Sweden was the first to wear the dress while at Stockholm’s Royal Palace to attend the Te Deum Thanksgiving Service in April 2016.
One year later, Queen Letizia of Spain added her own touch and included a belted with the dress while wearing it for an event at Madrid’s Royal Spanish Academy on June 22, 2017.
Emilia Wickstead Pastel Dress
A firm favourite of many royals for its reliably and simple yet stunning designs, this pastel Emilia Wickstead dress is no exception and is perfect for any event.
Crown Princess Mary of Denmark debuted the dress while pictured out and about in Tokyo on March 28, 2015.
And years later, the Princess of Wales wore a pink version while attending London’s Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit on October 9, 2018.
Matching Turquoise Dress
Charlotte Casiraghi wore first wore the satin turquoise dress on July 12, 2005 for her uncle, Albert II’s, coronation.
And while royal fans never expected to see the dress again, fourteen years later, her sister Princess Alexandra dug the dress out for an Alberta Ferretti fashion show in Monte Carlo on May 2, 2019.
Erdem Floral Dress
Whether you opt for a billowing maxi or a short and sweet mini, this Erdem floral dress is a must-have item for any wardrobe.
In keeping with her surroundings, Kate wore a floral print dress for the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show. The Victorian-style dress is crafted using cotton-silk voile and features crochet-lace trim.
Princess Eugenie was also a fan of the dress, as she wore the number a month prior for Windsor’s traditional Royal Maundy Service at St George’s Chapel on April 18, 2019.
Vilshenko Lilac Dress
Both Princess Claire of Luxembourg and Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway looked radiant in lilac in a flowy Vilshenko dress.
No doubt a favorite designer amongst royals all over Europe, the Princesses each styled the dress to match their own sense of style.
Princess Claire of Luxembourg wore the dress to the 2016 National Day Celebration in Luxembourg, and styled her hair in a sleek bun with a floral accessory.
Whereas Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway paired the gown with a wild flower crown for a royal event at Stiftsgarden in Trondheim.
Safiyaa Caped Dress
Hailing from Safiyaa’s PF19 Collection, the ‘Kalika’ dress features a gorgeous shoulder cape silhouette, back drape detailing and slits around the lower leg.
Meghan Markle wore the red full-length £1,295 Safiyaa dress, jewelled Simone Rocha earrings, and gorgeous red Stuart Weitzman heels to the the Mountbatten Festival of Music in March 2020.
Jordan’s Zeina Shaban also wore the same dress but in a stunning electric blue to attend the royal wedding of Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif, in Amman, Jordan, on June 1.
Jenny Packham Gown
Jenny Packham’s gowns are a firm favorite among royals, especially the Princess of Wales.
For the 2018 Tusk Conservation Awards, Kate recycled one of her older Jenny Packham dresses, having first wore it back in 2012. From the teal colour and pleated design to the lace detailing and belted waist, the designer dress established itself as timeless.
Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore her own pale blue version of the classic dress to a gala in New York in the same number in October of 2013.
