The travel photographer who follows colours over fashion trends

What’s your favourite fashion era?
The 1970s. I love the silhouettes: everything from the high-waisted jeans to the flowy nature of the dresses.

Do you have a favourite label?
I love anything Hermès, especially the leather goods and the scarves.

And a favourite fragrance?
I wear an orange blossom oil I found in Marrakesh many years ago. I love it so much because it reminds me of exploring and being excited about new adventures, that thrill of travel.

What would you wear …
… on a first date? A long, flowy sundress – belted, with a straw hat and wooden clogs.
… on a plane? On my last trip in March to Amsterdam, I wore a vintage pink silk pleated skirt and a cashmere cardigan with some nice flats.
… to the Oscars? The sunshine-yellow Vera Wang dress that Michelle Williams wore to the Oscars with Heath Ledger in 2006 – a perfectly fluted and frilled timeless frock.

Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child?
A little red, white and blue sailing outfit. I thought I was the bee’s knees.

Kara aged seven at her home in Brisbane.

And your worst fashion mistake?
I was a teenager through the ’90s and very much into grunge in my army pants and flannel shirts. But I don’t regret it. It’s important to find out what you are attracted to – and in those days it was being alternative.

What was your first fashion moment?
When I was 19 and studying photography in Toowoomba, I would hit up the op shops. Back in the day people would really dress up, so I’d come across all these beautiful items, like a Burberry trench coat and clothes from the 1940s and ’50s. It was the first time I had the opportunity to understand and experiment with different fashions and my own style.

What’s at the top of your wish list?
An Hermès Birkin bag in tan from the 1990s – I am always searching the internet for a second-hand one. I love how Jane Birkin personalised all of hers with handwriting inside, looped worry beads and “Free Tibet” stickers stuck all over the expensive bag.

What would you never wear?
Drop-crotch pants. Also, overalls.

Is there a current trend you like?
I love fashion but I don’t follow trends. I have colours that I am attracted to: dusty pink, muted olive, tan, ivory and cream; colours from the landscape. And I love certain textures: linen, cotton, canvas, leather and straw. Those things sometimes fall in and out with what is currently on trend.

What shoes do you wear the most?
I’m loyal to a tan leather hippie sandal.

Who’s your style muse?
Liv Tyler in Stealing Beauty. And I love the adventurous spirit of Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient.

What do you wear on location?
A pair of white jeans with pockets full of lens caps and a linen shirt with sleeves I can cuff up or down.

What’s your favourite look for a casual Sunday?
I’ll be barefoot at the beach, so little white shorts and black one-piece swimmers, plus my sunhat.
