The UK supermarkets selling most fruit – not Sainsbury’s, Asda or Morrisons

British fruit sales have been led by two popular UK supermarkets this year – and they’re not which ones you might expect. Aldi and Lidl have led the way with British fruit sales this year, according to the latest data from growing groups. 

Statistics from the British Berry Growers and British Apples and Pears show Lidl has claimed top spot as Retailer of the Year 2025. It has sold the most apples since September, the start of the UK topfruit season, reports The Grocer.

Trade body British Apples & Pears (BAPL) said September and October saw strong volumes of new-season British apples supplied by their members.

And Lidl led the way, accounting for 22.7% (4,313 tonnes) of the crop supplied by BAPL growers. Aldi followed closely behind with 20% (3,809 tonnes).

Nick Marston, chair of the British Berry Growers, says: “We’ve seen an increase of more than 10% across sales of all berries and all retailers, taking us to over 120,000 tonnes of berries for the season. That’s a lot of goodness we’re delivering to UK consumers.

“In a world where there is so much noise about HFSS foods and ultra-processed foods, it feels great to see such strong support for healthy, entirely natural and delicious British berries.”

But Lidl is not the only supermarket to take home an award.

Aldi has claimed the BlackBerry Retailer of the Year crown for a 66% increase in sales of blackberries.

The two supermarket giants are popular chains in the UK. Often known for being more affordable, Aldi and Lidl have gained a huge following among shoppers.

The supermarkets have become popular due to their cheap groceries and eclectic, ever-changing middle aisles. 

Both of the German discount chains have succeeded in beating their rivals, the likes of Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, to win their respective awards.
