Britain’s seaside towns have long been synonymous with summer holidays, from traditional piers and promenades to sandy beaches, fish and chips and family attractions. But while some coastal resorts continue to draw huge crowds, others have struggled to win over visitors, with complaints ranging from uninspiring seafronts and limited attractions to poor food options and disappointing value for money.
A Which? survey has revealed how holidaymakers rate some of the UK’s best-known seaside destinations, with thousands of visitors sharing their experiences. The research looked at a range of factors including the quality of beaches, seafronts and piers, food and drink, tourist attractions and overall satisfaction.
The results make for uncomfortable reading for some of Britain’s most familiar resorts, with several popular holiday destinations receiving low scores across multiple categories. Some towns managed to impress in one area, such as their beaches, but struggled elsewhere, while others received consistently poor ratings from visitors.
Here are the 20 lowest-scoring seaside towns, ranked from the least poorly rated to the town at the bottom of the table.
15. Paignton – 53%
Paignton is part of Devon’s English Riviera and is known for its sandy beach, traditional pier and family attractions, including Paignton Zoo and the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
However, it scored 53% in the Which survey. The Devon resort received three stars for its beach and seafront and pier, while food and drink and tourist attractions scored two. Scenery, shopping and peace and quiet were all rated just one star, showing why it remains in the survey’s lowest-scoring group.
