Newcomer: Wander Franco placed on administrative leave
Major League Baseball placed Wander Franco from the Tampa Bay Rays on administrative leave this morning, extending Franco’s time away from the Rays for an unknown period of time.
MLB headquarters and authorities in the Dominican Republic have separate investigations on going on allegations that Franco had an inappropriate relationship with a minor.
Several people briefed on the agreement that places Franco on administrative leave said the leave does not have a fixed end date tied to a particular day on the calendar, which is typically the way administrative leave has been structured in the past. Rather, the license is tied to when certain things happen in the course of the investigation.

Consider these statistical rankings of the Padres going into Monday night’s game, and tell me how they could possibly have only a 12 percent chance of becoming one of baseball’s 12 postseason qualifiers.
- Rotation Effectiveness: 3rd
- Bullpen ERA: 12th
- Outs above average: 1st
- Runs per game: 15
- Race Differential: 10th
Not bad, right? However, the Padres, before their 6-2 victory over the billfish on Monday night, they were six games away from a wild card berth. The teams that preceded them included all three in playoff position, the Phillies, puppies and giantsas well as three relative upstarts, the diamondbacks, reds and Marlins.
The Padres opened the season with the third-highest payroll in the sport. The Diamondbacks, Reds and Marlins were in the bottom eight. So how can the Padres be in this position after reaching the NLCS last season?

The Padres should bury those clubs. Instead, they are chasing them. It shouldn’t be possible. But it is your reality.
Announcers can predict the future, apparently: I feel it in my bones, I feel it in my bones
Is this the most important story you’re going to read all day? No. But it’s still very weird!
In the top of the first inning in Houston, Kevin Millar – working red sox color commentary for NESN: predicted a home run from Adam Duvall. “He’s going deep,” Millar said, without being asked. “This is not a good matchup for (stars pitcher Cristian) Javier.”
Pretty sure, – bam —Duvall squashed a three-run shot over Crawford’s boxes from left field. Millar looked surprised and yelled excitedly. THAT?! as the ball rose.

“I have a feeling this ball could travel a long distance here,” Phillies broadcaster John Kruk said.
Schwarber sent the next pitch 444 feet, to the second deck.

The Yankees joined the recruiting bandwagon, promoting Everson Pereira and Oswald Peraza to the big leagues. It’s the latest sign that the powers that be in New York are capable of reading tea leaves. It’s time to hoist the sails for the 2023 season and see what they have in store for 2024.
The names, yes, are very similar. If you’re not a Yankees fan, I’ll help you figure out who’s who:
- Pereira: 22 years old, Venezuelan, top 5 prospect in Yankees system, right-handed, 5-11, 190 lbs, outfielder.
- peraza: 23 years old, Venezuelan, top 5 prospect in Yankees system, right-handed, 6-0, 200 lbs, infielder.
Wow, okay, the best thing I have for you is the Wizard of Oz (SW-wald) lived inside the curtain (infielder). all fast tornado air (By-EIR-a) was outsidewinger (outfielder).
A stretch? Absolutely. But it’s either that or start looking at the 2023 Yankees, so I feel like I’ve given them a slightly less painful option.

baseball card of the week
This is a 1954 Topps Harry Perkowski of the Cincinnati “Redlegs”. I didn’t really know anything about Perkowski before I picked up this card, and the only real story I could find about him is on a site that no longer exists (you can still read it, thanks to internet file).
The short version: He came from the coal mines, his big-league career was set back by military service, arm problems cost him some longevity. Pretty standard for the time. That linked history is mostly marked by the stars Perkowski crossed paths with.
But sometimes I love that about old cards. Although this guy was not a star, he still made it to the big leagues. I still have his card and am still doing a Google search to find out more about him. That’s forever, or as close as we get in baseball.
Handshakes and high fives
This week power rankings I come up with a playlist of ’90s songs, and I have to say I didn’t expect to see Silver Jewish on our site outside of this newsletter, so kudos to Rustin Dodd for that.
He tiles lost a position in the playoffs. All they have to do to get it back is beat the the best team in the AL.
Oh, the White Sox want a new stadium, huh? feels like maybe not the best time trying to harness the public interest for that sort of thing, but what do I know?
He Nationals They have shown a bit of a struggle in the second half. The board rewarded manager Davey Martinez with a contract extension (And it looks like GM Mike Rizzo isn’t far behind.)
