Timeline: Politicians put out of action by the coronavirus

The coronavirus second wave is turning politics and diplomacy upside down, with a U.S. election disrupted while President Donald Trump went to the hospital, an EU summit called off at a few days’ notice and a succession of leaders infected or forced to self-isolate for fear of infection.

At the latest gathering of EU leaders in Brussels, two attendees — Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin — had to leave the event early after learning they had been in contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus. Their Polish counterpart did not come at all for similar reasons.
