Toby Carvery makes huge refill rule change in all 158 restaurants

New obesity rules have forced Toby Carvery to make changes to its refillable drinks offer. From October 1, the chain is no longer offering Pepsi, the full-sugar option it was offering, as a refill. This comes as a result of new regulations aimed at tackling obesity in children. The rule bans multi-buy promotions on unhealthy food and drinks.

As a result, restaurant chains such as Toby Carvery can’t offer free refills on certain sugary drinks. Indeed, Toby Carvery is not the only place to be impacted. Morrisons was also forced to stop its refillable hot chocolates and mochas for the same reason.

The restrictions include “buy one, get one free” offers, as well as free refill deals.

Toby Carvery, which offers customers free refills on soft drinks in its restaurants, has confirmed that the deal now excludes full sugar drinks such as Pepsi due to the legislation change.

A spokesperson for Toby Carvery said: “In accordance with the change in legislation, our unlimited soft drink refill choices are all sugar free. Our menus continue to offer a full range of soft drink options to our guests.”

The new rules will be followed by a ban on advertising less unhealthy food and drinks on television before 9pm and a complete ban on online promotions from January next year.

One person on Reddit accused the changes of “taking away free will”.

Another, posting on social media, said: “I always thought it was too good to last.”

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson previously said: “Obesity robs children of the best possible start in life, sets them up for a lifetime of health problems and costs the NHS billions.

“This government is taking action to end the targeting of junk food ads at kids, across both TV and online.”
