Tropical Storm Debby intensifies, could become Category 1 hurricane before landfall in Florida

The National Hurricane Center upgraded the tropical depression making its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast to Tropical Storm Debby on Saturday evening. The NHC said Tropical Storm Debby is located over the southern Gulf of Mexico. It has winds of 50 mph and a central pressure of 1001 MB.In its 5 a.m. advisory Sunday, the NHC said Debby is gaining strength and is forecast to become a hurricane as it approaches Florida’s Big Bend Region by Monday. The system is expected to dump plenty of rain on Florida, but the exact timing of those impacts is still unknown. Currently, models show rain starting on Sunday and lasting until almost midweek. However, this could change depending on the speed and intensity of the system.
