Truck crashes into Seaside house; one hospitalized

People attending the Wheels and Waves Car Show in Seaside were jolted by a loud crash shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.

They quickly moved in the direction of the sound — some swiftly walking, others jogging — up to Holladay Drive.

About 40 people became unwitting witnesses to what had caused the boom when they came upon a white Chevy Silverado that had crashed into a house.

Seaside resident Mike Mantia, who was participating in the Wheels and Waves car show, walked up to view the incident.

“I heard a car goin’ way over the speed limit and just flying and then I turned and I saw him go flying by and then — bam! … I know he was going way over the speed limit.”

A.J. Wilson and Vicki Brooks were in the opposite lane when the truck seemed to lose control.

“We were heading northbound and we saw him hit the curb just a little ways down there and go clear up onto the sidewalk and came off — and he was going straight for us,” said Wilson. “He got right to the center line and I hit my horn and he pulled back and hit this little jump here and hit air and went through the little corner fence where you’re standing and into the house.

“We were heading northbound and he was heading southbound at least 65 to 70, at least — at least. That’s all we know.”

Wilson, who went to check on the other driver when the white pick up came to a rest after crashing through the house, said to an officer on scene that the driver, “he was moaning to them and talking a little bit.”

The couple said they had gotten into their black Honda Accord in the first place to “take a quick look at the car show.” Shaking his head, Wilson said, “I think we’ll go home now.”

Seaside Police Department vehicles, Seaside Fire and Rescue, Gearhart Police, Pacific Power and an Oregon State Trooper were on the scene.

David Rankin, division chief of operations and training at Seaside Fire and Rescue, said that dispatch received a call at 3 p.m.

Shortly after, the driver was removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital.

The condition of the driver was not known at press time.

Rankin said that they are “still trying to put the pieces together,” but that the single occupant of the truck “for some reason failed to navigate or negotiate this curve and went into this house which is unoccupied.”

In an interview about 40 minutes after the crash occurred, Rankin said the police had made another sweep, “making sure no one else was in there.” Now, they were “trying to figure out a plan for the structural stability of the house before we move the car.”
