Turkey resuming domestic and international flights

Jun 4, 2020

Domestic flights resumed in Turkey today and the country plans to start international ones in stages this month. Turkey has made deals with 15 countries for flights and will resume flights to a total of 40 nations this month.

Turkey, a major international transit hub, closed most of its borders in March to limit the spread of COVID-19 and halted nearly all flights in the process. The country is now in the process of reopening. Businesses are back at work and domestic travel has resumed.

Turkey now has an agreement for reciprocal flights with several Middle Eastern and European countries, including Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. The country further plans to resume flights to several European and Asian countries in stages throughout the month beginning June 10, Reuters reported today.

The country’s flagship carrier, Turkish Airlines, also resumed domestic flights today, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported. There are several dozen domestic destinations now, some with multiple flights per day, according to an announcement from Turkish Airlines.

Middle Eastern airlines are beginning to return to regular international flights as the pandemic continues. The news in Turkey coincides with the Emirati airlines Emirates and Etihad Airways announcing additional flight destinations this month. Other major transit hubs in the region, including Beirut and Amman, Jordan, remain closed to international passenger flights.
