‘Twiggy’ Forrest acquires one other iconic Australian model

Iconic Australian hatmaker Akubra is ready to change possession for the primary time in 5 generations.

Tattarang, owned by Australian businessman Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest and his spouse Nicola, has acquired Akubra from the Keir household who hint their possession again 147 years.

The acquisition will make sure the model stays Australian-owned and domestically made with Tattarang committing to proceed manufacturing in Kempsey on the NSW North Coast.

In October 2020, Tattarang purchased iconic boots model RM Williams which has since employed virtually 500 additional employees and added two manufacturing traces at its Adelaide workshop.

The 2 manufacturers will stay separate inside Tattarang.

Akubra outgoing chairman Stephen Keir IV stated the household had chosen to promote to Tattarang as a result of they wished the corporate to have custodians who would shield and spend money on it.

“We thought lengthy and onerous about promoting the enterprise after 5 generations of household possession and after we noticed how the Forrests have invested in native manufacturing with RM Williams, we determined they had been the proper custodians for Akubra,” Mr Keir stated.

Akubra was based in Hobart in 1876 and Stephen Keir I joined the corporate in 1904.

The handmade hats have been produced for Australian Olympic groups, the Australian Armed Forces and featured in traditional movies.

Every hat takes about six weeks and 162 steps to make, passing via 60 pairs of palms in that point.

Akubra hats have been made in Australian since 1876.

Forrest, who grew up in regional NSW, stated she was dedicated to defending and enhancing Akubra’s legacy.

“The picture of my father’s tireless power and perseverance, measured by the sweat on his Akubra, stays etched in my reminiscence,” she stated.

“An Akubra has all the time been a part of my life and as a brand new custodian I’m excited to assist new generations uncover this treasured Australian icon.”
