Two new Professors of Paediatric Cardiology for All-Island Network

Over 90 children from NI receive cardiac surgery in CHI Crumlin in 2020

Two professors in paediatric cardiology are being sought as part of the ongoing development of the All-Island Congenital Heart Disease Network, writes Maureen Browne.

One new post is to be based in University College Dublin (UCD)/Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), while the second is an integrated post between Queen’s University Belfast/Ulster University and the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

The successful candidates are to work to develop an All-Island Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Network research strategy.

The All-Island Congenital Heart Disease Network was established in 2015 by the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (NI) Ministers for Health to provide high quality and timely access to specialist cardiac services for all children and young people on the island of Ireland.

It is the first cross-jurisdictional Network on the island, driving the implementation of evidence based, safe and effective cardiac care for children and young people across the island of Ireland.

As part of the network, children from NI have heart surgery carried out in CHI Crumlin.

In 2020, a total of 92 children from NI had cardiac surgery in Children’s Health Ireland, Crumlin, compared to 61 children in 2019.

The role of the new Clinical Professor in Paediatric Cardiology in NI is to develop the newly-established NI paediatric cardiology academic unit and work in collaboration with colleagues in the Republic of Ireland as an integral part of the All-Island Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Network.

Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University are working in partnership to establish an academic unit of excellence for paediatric cardiology research in Northern Ireland, as part of the All-Island congenital Heart Disease Network.

Both Universities are collaborating to develop this initiative focused on health innovation to transform and deliver cost effective, high quality care to children and families living with congenital heart disease.
