UK conscription height limit as 1 inch could make huge the difference

It appears many of those who would likely face being called up if National Service was reintroduced are not keen on the prospect.

In a recent poll, some four in ten (41%) of 18 to 27-year-olds said they would not fight for Britain under any circumstances.

Just 11% said they would fight if they were called up, while 37% said they would if they agreed with the reason for war.

And for those wondering how they might be able to avoid being conscripted, it is suggested height requirements could be one possible way people could get out of serving — and one inch could make a difference.

The British Army has a minimum height requirement of 4 ’10 (148 centimetres), although for some trades that include driving this is higher at 5′ 2 (158 centimetres).

But for the Royal Navy, the minimum height requirement is one inch less.

Sailors must be at least 4’ 9 (145 centimetres), although aviators need to be a minimum of 4′ 11 (151.5 centimetres) and submariners are required to be around 5 ‘2 (157 centimetres) or taller.

Air & Ground stewards are required to be 5’3 to just under 6’5 (161 centimetres to 195 centimetres), while pilots must fit specific cockpit/equipment needs.

All three services have a series of entry requirements, including health, fitness and age.

The Ministry of Defence has insisted it has no plans to introduce conscription and its focus is on bolstering the professional military.
