UK department store giant with 36 shops unveils new café and restaurant plan

Refurbishment work has already started in three stores, with Chichester, Reading and Oxford Street the first branches to undergo investment. The Oxford Street store will be the flagship store and is undergoing the most extensive refurbishment, spanning 13 weeks. The restaurant in this store will reopen in early August. All 32 cafés are earmarked to be refurbished and rebranded by the end of 2027.

There are currently 62 cafés and restaurants across the John Lewis store estate, with hospitality making up over 20% of in-store transactions.

Platter will serve a refreshed menu while continuing to offer John Lewis customer favourites, along with popular My John Lewis membership perks such as free hot drinks and cake.

The category has experienced nearly 10% sales growth over the past year.

Katie Papakonstantinou, Director of Services & Hospitality for John Lewis, said: “Customers are spending more time in our shops, and food and drink is an increasingly important part of that experience.

“Platter John Lewis will give customers a more modern, welcoming place to pause, meet and enjoy something delicious while they shop.

“This is an exciting investment in our hospitality offer and an important part of how we’re making John Lewis shops even better places to visit.

“We’re pleased to get the first refurbishments underway and look forward to opening our flagship at Oxford Street this summer.”

John Lewis has teamed up with hospitality specialist Benugo to redesign and manage its new restaurants.

This collaboration extends their decade-long partnership, with Benugo already operating its own cafés in 10 John Lewis stores.
