UK Deputy PM Raab to face conduct inquiry

LONDON — Dominic Raab, the U.K.’s justice secretary and deputy prime minister, is facing a formal investigation into his behavior after two formal complaints were lodged against him.

Rishi Sunak’s deputy did not specify the nature of the complaints, but a series of allegations about bullying behavior and the aggressive treatment of junior civil servants have been reported in the U.K. media since Friday.

The two complaints relate to his time as foreign secretary and a previous stint as justice secretary earlier this year, Raab said in a letter published on Twitter.

Sunak confirmed in a letter before departing the G20 summit in Bali that he would proceed with an investigation into Raab’s conduct.

As Raab stood in for Sunak at prime minister’s questions Wednesday, Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner called his track record “unacceptable” and called on him to apologize.

Raab, however, urged her to wait for the outcome of the inquiry, adding: “I am confident that I have behaved professionally throughout.”

Last week the Mirror reported Raab was nicknamed the “incinerator” because of the rate he ‘burns through’ staff. The Guardian reported that the Foreign Office’s most senior official warned Raab about the way he treated junior colleagues in his private office.

Raab has denied all claims of bullying.
