UK households issued ‘scary’ nuclear war warning – ‘time to be aware’

It has regularly been described as the most terrifying film ever made. But Threads, a 1980s cult sensation which paints a harrowing picture of a nuclear attack on Sheffield, could be closer than ever to reality in 2026 according to its director.

The landmark nuclear war film shows in more detail than any film ever has what happens in a nuclear detonation.

As the BBC reported: “Amid the thermonuclear blast that follows, windows smash; walls disintegrate; buildings crumble; human life melts as a firestorm engulfs Sheffield. The soundtrack to destruction is a rumble so distressing that it is comparable to an enormous door slamming in the depths of hell.

“But it is Threads’ depiction of the subsequent nuclear winter that lingers long in the mind. Amid the scorched ruins, we follow Ruth’s struggle for survival in a post-apocalyptic world ridden by famine and disease. In the scramble for food – now civilisation’s only currency – law and order collapses, eclipsed by anarchy and authoritarian rule.”

Now Threads director Mick Jackson has spotted eerie similarities between the beginning of his war film – which was set against a backdrop of tensions in Iran – and where we are today, and is warning households to be aware of the possibility of a nuclear detonation.

Speaking to Chas Newkey-Burden on ‘Jesus Christ, They’ve Done It – the Threads podcast’, Mick said: “[I’m feeling] very scared – it’s a tingly kind of feeling and not a pleasant one at all.

“Tensions in Iran are also what’s happening in the background of the first half of Threads and look where that went.

“What’s happening now is scary and not something you can think about all of the time, but I hope that when you do think about it, some of the images of Threads come to mind, they’re designed to stick in your memory.

“I think now the international situation is getting very complicated. People who frankly don’t know really what they’re doing are in charge of policies and also our futures. So, I think the time to be aware of nuclear war as a possibility is now.”

Fellow nuclear war film director Nicholas Meyer, who produced 1980s nuke flick The Day After also warned on the same podcast that US President Donald Trump has the capacity to press the button.

He added: “Do I think Trump has it in him to go nuclear? Oh sure, I think I think he has a terrific death wish so he’ll keep going.

“One thing Trump and Hitler have in common is that death wish. I think Trump just wants to push until somebody somehow stops him. He will keep going on the assumption on his part that sooner or later one thing or another will stop him but if nothing stops him he’ll just keep doing it until he does something big enough, egregious enough, or mistaken enough.”
