LONDON – UK Labor leader Keir Starmer has launched a reshuffle of his core team as Parliament returns from recess.
The move by the opposition chief, whose party is ahead of the ruling Conservatives in polls with a general election scheduled for 2024, comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reshuffled his cabinet last week.
The first to resign in the shakeup is the shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, Jim McMahon.
in Starmer letter In accepting McMahon’s resignation, Starmer said he understands the former leader has faced a “series of personal challenges” in addition to his work on the environmental report.
The opposition leader has yet to announce who will replace McMahon.
The Labor reshuffle is being closely watched to see if Starmer moves Angela Rayner, his directly elected deputy and who currently follows the Cabinet Office and labor reports.
“This is about Angela,” a party official told the POLITICO London Playbook. “They have to find a role (the leader’s office) that she’s happy with and they have to find a role that Angela will accept. The crossing in that Venn diagram is pretty minimal.”
It has been suggested that Rayner move to the housing and grading assignment, which would require a new spot for Lisa Nandy.
Nandy, once a leadership candidate, is seen as a key figure in the soft-left faction of the party. Since he took office, Starmer has tried to move the party closer to the perceived political center.
