PRAGUE, July 19 (Reuters) – The head of Britain’s MI6 foreign spy service on Wednesday appealed to Russians horrified by the war in Ukraine to “cooperate” with their intelligence service and end the bloodshed.
In his second speech since becoming head of the Secret Intelligence Service in 2020, Moore said there seemed little chance Russia would regain momentum in Ukraine.
Delivering his speech at the British embassy in Prague, he compared the current situation in Ukraine to the Prague Spring in 1968, when the Soviet Union abolished liberalizing reforms.
“While witnessing the venality, infighting and callous incompetence of their leaders – the human factor at its worst – many Russians are wrestling with the same dilemmas as their predecessors in 1968,” Moore said.
“I invite you to do what others have done in the last 18 months and join us. Our door is always open… Your secrets will be safe with us and together we will work to end the bloodshed.”
He described Iran’s decision to supply Moscow with suicide drones for the Ukraine conflict as “unconscionable” and sparked internal disputes at the highest level of the Tehran regime.
Moore warned that China and Russia were racing to master technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing.
He returned to the topic by saying that AI would complement the work of intelligence agencies, not replace humans who could uncover secrets beyond the reach of technology.
“The unique characteristics of human agents in the right places will be even more significant,” he will say.
“Human intelligence in the age of artificial intelligence will increasingly be defined as those things that machines cannot do, although we should expect the frontier of machine capability to advance at astonishing speed.”
