LONDON, Aug 23 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak failed to properly declare his wife’s stake in a childcare business that would benefit from new government policy, but the failure was unintentional, the body said on Wednesday. of control of norms of the Parliament.
Parliament Commissioner for Standards began to investigate Sunak in April, after opposition parties raised doubts about media reports that Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murthy, was a shareholder in a company that would benefit from support for the childcare sector.
The commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, is responsible for the House of Commons code of conduct and investigates any suspected breaches.
Publishing the findings of his investigation, Greenberg said Sunak should have declared the shareholding when asked about the policy by a committee of senior lawmakers, but was satisfied that the British leader had confused the rules on registration and declaration of interests.
“Having considered the information available to me, I have decided that the code violation appears to have been unintentional,” Greenberg said. “I confirm that the matter is now closed.”
Greenberg, who can refer lawmakers who break the rules to a committee that has the power to suspend or expel them from parliament, said he had decided to conclude the investigation through a rectification procedure.
Correction procedures may include offering advice to the legislator, demanding an apology, or correcting members’ record of financial interests.
In a letter to Greenberg, released by the commissioner’s office, Sunak apologized for confusing the language of the record and statement.
“I am pleased that this matter is now concluded by rectification,” Sunak added.
