LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) – Britain’s RMT union said on Thursday rail workers had voted in favor of more strikes in a new vote as part of a long-running pay dispute with train operating companies.
“This sends a clear message to employers that the enormous anger among rail workers is very real and they need to acknowledge that fact, face reality and make better proposals,” said RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch.
Thousands of railway workers in Britain were already planning a strike on may 13 after the RMT rejected a new wage offer, the union said last week, escalating a dispute that has led to disruptive strikes on the transport network since last summer.
The result of the vote gives the RMT the mandate for six more months of strike action, but the union did not announce new strike dates on Thursday.
Separately, British train drivers also announced three days of strikes in May and June last week, in their own dispute with the rail companies.
Railway workers are among the hundreds of thousands across Britain, including teachers, doctors, nurses and civil servants who have pay disputes with their employers as inflation It hovers around 40-year highs of around 10%.
Rail Delivery Group, which represents rail companies, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
