UK’s cheapest petrol station in every county as prices soar

The surging cost of crude oil is sending wholesale fuel prices in the UK sharply higher – but how hard will it hit a petrol station near you? The average price of petrol on UK forecourts reached 137p this week, an increase of nearly 6p a litre since the conflict in the Middle East began nine days ago. The US and Israeli bombardment of Iran saw the cost of crude oil exceed $100 (£74) a barrel on Monday, sparking fears that costs will spiral even further.

But across the UK, prices at the pumps vary considerably depending on where you are filling up your car. In Northern Ireland, for example, prices are significantly lower than the national average, with the mean cost in Belfast nearly 10p a litre lower, at 125.8p for standard unleaded. Experts have warned that British motorists can expect further increases if the price of crude oil stays high.

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit said the historic link between oil and fuel prices means oil trading at $100 (£74) a barrel for a prolonged period could see petrol prices hit 150p a litre, while oil reaching $120 (£89) a barrel would result in UK petrol prices of around 170p a litre.

The most expensive areas to fill up at the moment are North Warwickshire, Maidstone, Breckland and Brentwood, where average prices all exceed 141p per litre of petrol.

However, in each of these local authorities there are cheaper filling stations where prices are closer to the national average.

The cheapest place in the UK to fill up your car with petrol is at an Asda garage on South Church Road, County Durham.

According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £24 by filling up at this forecourt, compared to the most expensive petrol station.

Meanwhile, the most expensive filling station in the UK is an Asda station on the M74 Southbound in South Lanarkshire.

The cost of standard petrol at this station is 171.9p, meaning it would cost a total of £95 to fill up a family care.

Diesel prices have risen faster than prices for unleaded petrol, with an increase of around 9p a litre since the Iran war began on February 28.

For diesel car owners, the cheapest place to fill up is an Asda garage in Kingswood, Hull. The cost of a litre of standard diesel at this forecourt was 134.9p, as of March 9, according to prices supplied by retailers.
