UK’s spending review to conclude November 25

LONDON — U.K. Chancellor Rishi Sunak will announce a one-year plan for public spending on November 25.

The Treasury on Wednesday confirmed the date of the spending review, which has been scaled back from a planned three-year settlement.

The review will set departmental budgets for 2021-22, but will also include multi-year settlements for the National Health Service, schools and “priority infrastructure projects” such as hospital building and the High Speed 2 rail link.

“Long term investment in our country’s future is the right thing to do, especially in areas which are the cornerstone of our society like the NHS, schools and infrastructure,” Sunak said.

The Treasury abandoned plans for a three year review earlier this month, citing the need to focus on the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The review will, the Treasury said, focus on giving “certainty” for departments to respond to coronavirus and tackle unemployment, offer “enhanced support” for public services, and target investment in infrastructure.
