LONDON, July 7 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Friday that he hopes NATO can proceed to ratify Sweden’s membership of the alliance as soon as possible, noting the “benefits significant” of the country’s membership.
A Downing Street spokesman said the two spoke on Friday about a variety of issues, including Ukraine, their bilateral relationship and the fight against illegal immigration.
“He underlined the significant benefits of Sweden joining NATO and the progress they have made in addressing Turkey’s legitimate security concerns and hoped that the alliance could proceed to ratify its membership as soon as possible,” the spokesman said before a NATO summit next week.
