Ulster hooker Rob Herring should have been sent-off against Toulouse, claims European head of match officials

European Professional Club Rugby head of match officials Tony Spreadbury has revealed that Ulster hooker Rob Herring should have been sent-off against Toulouse in their Heineken Champions Cup last-16 tie.

erring escaped punishment for his part in a double-tackle on Anthony Jelonch, which saw tighthead prop Tom O’Toole dismissed for making contact with the French flanker’s head.

Herring also appeared to make contact with Jelonch’s head with his follow-up hit, but it was only his team-mate who saw red for the incident, with referee Matthew Carley and TMO Iain Tempest determining that was sufficient discipline.

Spreadbury confirmed that a subsequent review determined that a second red card should have been issued and Ulster should have been reduced to 13 men for the remainder of the game, which they would go on to lose.

“Under our review process we looked at this and under the head contact process, especially when No.2, Mr Herring, is always illegal, you could quite easily see two reds,” said Spreadbury, who was speaking at an EPCR media briefing to explain their focus on safety, speed and space in the game.

“Do we want two reds in this situation? Two reds for us would not be wrong.”
