Ram Shankar Das, a priest at the Narasimha temple, livestreamed the suicide on Facebook, claiming that police harassment forced him to take the extreme step.
A few days ago, the police registered a case against Ram Shankar Das in connection with the disappearance of an elderly Mahant, Ram Sharan Das, from the temple. Ram Sharan Das (80) has been missing since January this year.
The body of Ram Shankar Das (28) was found hanging in his room in the temple premises on Monday afternoon, police said.
In the live video, Ram Shankar Das made serious accusations against the head of the Raiganj police post and an officer assigned to his security.
Kotwali Police Station officer Manoj Sharma said: “Priest Ram Shankar Das was a drug addict and committed suicide under the influence of drugs. The accusations that he made against the police are totally false ”.
When the priest did not appear for two days, the police opened the door of his room and it was seen that he had made a noose out of his cloth and hanged himself with their help. Prima facie, it looks like a suicide, Sharma said.
An investigation has been launched and all aspects of the case are being investigated, he said.
