A couple were allegedly killed by a single bullet fired by a husband embracing his wife in a bizarre incident in the Moradabad district of western Uttar Pradesh, police officials said.

The husband, Anek Pal, was around 40 years old and his wife Suman Pal was around 38 years old. According to police, the couple have left behind four children: a daughter and three sons.

Both were working in Chandigarh as day laborers and had reached their hometown of Moradabad, they said.

Police (Rural Moradabad) Superintendent Sandeep Kumar said the incident took place at the couple’s house in Khanpur village, within the confines of Bilari Police Station, on the middle night of 13-14. of June.

“The couple’s relatives, acquaintances and children told the police that the husband and wife frequently quarreled over various issues. Lately, they had been fighting a lot.

“On the night of June 13, Anek Pal held his prayers at home and then hugged his wife before shooting her. The same bullet hit Anek Pal’s body in his chest and went through his back. They were both shot and taken to a hospital, but did not survive,” Kumar said.

Police said they have not received any complaints from relatives of the dead couple, whose fighting has escalated in the past week since Suman lost a mobile phone during a wedding function.

Police Circle (Bilari Area) Officer Ankit Kumar told PTI that the firearm used in the episode was a domestically made weapon and an investigation is underway to find out how it was obtained.

Suspecting that the husband was engaged in occult practices prior to the incident, the officer said an investigation was underway to determine this.

When asked about custody of the couple’s four children, Kumar said: “Right now, the children are at their home in the village. His maternal relatives have approached the police for his custody. The matter would be looked at in detail and a further decision would be made accordingly according to the rules.”
