Veggie burgers survive EU vote

EU lawmakers voted Friday not to prohibit the use of meat-related names for plant-based meat subsitutes such as “veggie burgers” and “vegan sausages.”

But they approved an amendment that can further restrict the names of plant-based dairy alternatives such as “cheese substitute” or “yoghurt style.”

EU law already bans the use of dairy terms like “milk,” “cheese” or “butter” for vegan products that don’t come from animal milk (barring some exceptions). The new amendment could go even further and restrict the use of more descriptive names, like “cheese style” or “creamy.”
