BJP MP and head of the Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven female wrestlers, tried on Tuesday to equate wrestler Vinesh Phogat with Manthara, a character from the Hindu epic Ramayana.
The Ramayana says that Manthara, who was Queen Kaikeyi’s maid, convinced her that the throne of Ayodhya belonged to her son Bharat and that her stepson and crown prince Ram should be exiled from the kingdom.
“The role Manthara-Kaikeyi played in Treta yug, similarly, Vinesh Phogat is playing the role of Manthara for me,” Singh told a public meeting here.
He added that thousands of fighters were organizing protests against him before, but now there are only three husband-and-wife pairs left. There is no seventh, he said. “The day the results come out, I will also thank Manthara.”
The Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Singh after the wrestlers accused him of sexual harassment and is investigating the case.
“The fighters who were organizing protests, they have not been able to tell until today what happened to them, when, where and how,” Singh said.
Singh said he faces problems because of these sexual harassment allegations as did former US President Donald Trump, who has been accused of abuse by several women.
“I say that this conspiracy is not of today. It has been going on for many days, but something good will happen through this. Only God knows how I am surviving,” she said.
“This is a case of good touch-bad touch. False accusations have been made against me. God has made me a medium to fight these accusations. This is because God himself never appears. He makes someone a medium. In In the same way, God has made me the means to combat these accusations”.
On Sunday, Singh had said he was ready to take a drug test as long as wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia also took it.
Prominent fighters including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik have been protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since April 23, accusing the Kaiserganj MP of sexual exploitation.
The Ministry of Sports has canceled all activities of the wrestling federation until the investigation into the wrestlers’ complaints is completed.
