With Vučić’s defeat, Croatia’s nationalists have lost a useful bogeyman, Telegram observes:
“They’ve had an easy time of it with Vučić over the last 14 years. Serbia was led by a bogeyman, a self-proclaimed Greater Serbian. … Vučić made threats, Vučić built up the military, Vučić was ‘Serbia as it used to be’ – all images which in Croatia serve to herd voters into a pen where, although it stinks, it’s warm and safe. But what now? If there’s no longer a big bogeyman in the East, if there’s no latent threat of a ‘second half’, it will undoubtedly be more difficult to win votes in the name of national unity against the old threat. … If Greater Serbian politics really is out of the equation, the right’s position becomes far weaker.”
