Was this a penalty? Watch Maritzburg United’s controversial winner

Maritzburg United were afforded a controversial stoppage-time penalty against Mamelodi Sundowns, which they converted to claim a vital three points.

A clumsy challenge from Kennedy Mweene on Amadou Soukouna drew a penalty shout in the 91st minute.

The referee agreed that it was a penalty but fans are likely to remain divided.

Watch: Maritzburg United beat Sundowns with a late penalty

Before that it was Sundowns who might have sealed the match from the spot but Themba Zwane’s spot-kick was saved by Marcel Engelhardt.

Sundowns came into this match off the back of Caf Champions League competition but found Maritzburg United, who are fighting a relegation battle, up for the battle.

The Brazilians made just two changes from the team that beat TS Galaxy but were frustrated on a cool evening in Sleepy Hollow.

Sundowns give up a lead

Mamelodi Sundowns took the lead as Peter Shalulile once again got himself on the scoresheet.

Haashim Domingo had found himself with acres of space down the flank just before the half-hour mark and whipped in a curling cross that found Shalulile well. The striker dived in between his two markers to flick his header to the far past an outstretched Engelhardt.

That lead would not make it to the break though as a goalkeeping howler afforded Alfred Ndengane a free header which the veteran duly buried to level the scores.

A hand ball inside the box from United gave Zwane the spot-kick later in the second half, but Engelhardt was equal to his effort.

Downs continued to pile the pressure, but it would be the hosts who broke through thanks to a speculative bomb forward from a free kick in their own half.

Sundowns remain 17 points clear at the top of the PSL.
