Washington governor will not seek a fourth term

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington Gov. Jay Inlsee, a Democrat who sought to make the state a leader in progressive policies from climate change to preventing gun violence, said Monday he will not seek a fourth term in office. .

The 72-year-old’s announcement clears the way for younger party members to come forward, notably Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who has earned a national profile by challenging the former president’s travel ban and other policies. donald trump.

“As Governor, I have seen my role as an inspiration to move our state further and further,” Inslee said. “I’m pleased to say that this approach has worked to improve the lives of Washingtonians in many ways and in many places.”

Inslee was first elected in 2012, becoming the second Washington governor elected to three consecutive terms. He bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination on an environmental platform, but gained little traction.
