WATCH: Donald Trump blasts ‘crooked fake news’ BBC for ‘putting words in my mouth’

Donald Trump has accused the BBC of “putting words in my mouth” and dishing out “fake news” in a blistering new attack.

Speaking to crowds at the annual Nation Republican Congressional Committee fundraising dinner, he addressed the BBC Panorama documentary, which edited together sections from a speech made on January 6 to change what he said.

Mr Trump said the BBC made him appear to say “things that I never said that were terrible”.

The President said he told his wife, Melania – who produced a documentary about herself this year – that he never said the things edited by the BBC speech.

The couple then re-watched the Panorama documentary – and Mr Trump said it did appear as if he said the “terrible” things in the documentary.

“It was fake news. They put words in my mouth, sentences and paragraphs in my mouth. That was so horrible. So we brought a suit against them and they admitted they were guilty,” said the President, referring to the lawsuit he filed against the broadcaster in Florida.

Mr Trump is seeking £10billion in damages against the BBC, which is attempting to throw out the lawsuit on the basis that his reputation was not damaged and did not air in the US, meaning Florida courts lack jurisdiction.

The BBC has said it sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, but added it strongly disagrees there is a basis for a defamation claim.
