Wayne Gretzky’s final Oilers jersey sells for record-breaking $1.452M

Even at 61 years old, Wayne Gretzky is still breaking hockey records.

Gretzky’s last game-worn Edmonton Oilers jersey — during the 1988 Stanley Cup Final — sold for US$1.452 million at Grey Flannel Auctions on Sunday night, eclipsing Paul Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series jersey as the most expensive hockey jersey of all time.

Henderson’s jersey sold for $1.3 million.

The Oilers won the Stanley Cup that season, defeating the Boston Bruins in a four-game sweep, though Game 4 was suspended with both teams tied in the second period due to a power failure at Boston Garden and re-played in Edmonton two days later.

Gretzky, with 12 goals and 31 assists in 19 games, won the Conn Smyth as MVP of the playoffs.

The Stanley Cup victory marked the Oilers’ fourth title in five years, and also the final Stanley Cup of Gretzky’s career. Three months later, Gretzky was shockingly traded to the Los Angeles Kings — leading to a memorable, tearful press conference from The Great One.
