Denying the BJP’s allegations that the NC-Congress alliance in J&K espouses an agenda “aligned with Pakistan’s”, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday called the BJP “liars” and said the party “loves India but is married to Pakistan”.
“We did not go there (Pakistan) to eat biryani and to hug them. You hug them and then blame us,” he said at a press conference, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Lahore in 2015 to meet his then counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
“Whatever PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have said, that Congress wants to resume talks with Pakistan, these are all lies. They want to divert the issue… Mohabbat hamare saath, shaadi Pakistan ke saath hai unki (They love India but are married to Pakistan),” Kharge said.
Kharge, who was in J&K to address a campaign rally at Khour, also denied the BJP’s claims that Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, spoke about ending reservation to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Calling it propaganda, he said, “See, he (Rahul) has not said any such thing about reservation and he will not speak like that as well. We will also not allow him to say such a thing. So long as there is untouchability and illiteracy in the country, reservation will continue to stay and the Congress will continue to support it. It will not go, we will fight for it.”
The Congress chief also questioned Prime Minister Modi’s “failure” to take action against BJP leaders who used derogatory remarks against Gandhi. He said Gandhi was under attack for speaking the truth and “an atmosphere of hate” was being created against him like it was done against his grandmother and former PM Indira Gandhi.
“BJP, RSS leaders, including MLAs and MPs, talk about chopping off the tongues of our leaders but such provocative speeches are being ignored by the Prime Minister because he is frightened to take action against them,” Kharge said, adding the Congress would launch an agitation against such threats.
