“I am an LGBTQ-owned company, so it was very important to me to reflect that,” she said, emphasizing that she sells her Pride products year-round as part of her company’s standard offerings.
The “Ellos/Ellos” candle has a base of vanilla and top notes of lemon, while “Ella/Ella” smells of agave and peach. The “Gay Pride” candle offers a whiff of “ozone”, which Mr Dockal, 30, described as a smell of air.
Ingrid Nilsen, co-founder and creative director of New Savant, said her candle company was not releasing a Pride-specific scent this year, though it has in the past. Instead, she and the company’s CEO, Erica Anderson, opted for what they call the “Loud and Queer” package, a discounted set of four candles from their existing stock, many of which are queer-inspired. (Both co-founders are lesbians.)
“Supporting the rights of the LGBTQ community is a 365-day-a-year effort,” said Ms. Anderson, 39.
“This is not just a time to, like, put a rainbow on something and call it a day and feel like you’ve done the job,” added Ms Nilsen, 34. “What I would love to see in Pride campaigns is people really make an effort to center the queer community and not focus on people outside of the community who are allies.”
The last sail of The New Savant, which is included in the Pride pack, is “sapphics in the city.” She comes in a silver bottle wrapped in a soft pink label that explains the candle’s inspirations, including female identity, lesbian pulp fiction, and Ms. Nilsen’s favorite cocktail, the pink-hued Clover Club.
