What to Do This Weekend

Welcome. It’s nearly fall. School’s in session, Broadway’s back, the Emmy Awards are on Sunday and, depending on how you’re doing today, you might be feeling a sense of anticipation. Or is that anxiety? Sometimes, they’re indistinguishable. We continue, nonetheless.

Here’s what I’m excited about: Ken Burns’s Ali documentary series. The “Sopranos” prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark.” New books — fiction (Cixin Liu, Jonathan Franzen, Hillary Rodham Clinton?) and non- (Amia Srinivasan’s “The Right to Sex,” essays by Phoebe Robinson). Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.” Diana Ross’s first album in 15 years.

Lil Nas X’s debut studio album is out today. That’ll be my (and perhaps your?) weekend listening. Lindsey Buckingham’s new one is out today, too — alternate between the two for a real zoomer-boomer cocktail.

Or have an actual drink: Eric Asimov has 10 takeaways from seven years of his “Wine School” column that’ll help you choose a good bottle (or two) for the weekend. Or go for some brisk seltzer, in moderation. (Perhaps Topo Chico?)

Round out your generation-hopping entertainment with Julie Delpy’s Netflix series, “On the Verge,” described in Decider as “‘Girls’ if all the characters were twenty years older and in full midlife crisis mode.” To me, that’s a recommendation. If it’s not your thing, A.O. Scott recommends Clint Eastwood’s “deep cut for the die-hards,” “Cry Macho.” (Delpy: Gen X. “Girls”: millennials. Eastwood: Silent Generation. Bingo!)
