Tens of thousands of Whatsapp users across the globe say the messaging app is down.

From around 8.30pm UK time, a huge surge of complaints were registered on Downdetector, a website monitoring online services.

According to the site 89% of users can’t can’t connect, whole 8% are having trouble receiving messages and 1% can’t log into the Facebook owned app.

Lots of frustrated users said they uninstalled the app and redownloaded it only to find it still wasn’t working while others thought turning their devices off and on again might do the trick.

A live outage map shows a large bulk of the complaints are coming from Europe, including the UK, with one user in Wales saying the app hadn’t been working for 1.5 hours. Other parts of the world including the US, south America, India and Australia have also been affected.

According to The Verge Whatsapp rarely goes down – its last major outage being in April 2019 when it stopped working along with Facebook and Instagram for more than two hours.
