Musician Jake Blount and author Mark Anthony Neal on black music, exploitation, and the American entertainment industry.

Much of contemporary music and pop culture in the United States can be traced back to black and indigenous musicians.

However, his contributions have long gone unnoticed, and his songs have often been marketed to a largely white audience.

So how are musicians today working to undo that historical erasure? And how do they continue to celebrate black performance and art?
