Damage reported from severe thunderstorms in Pittsburgh area
Saturday is a Severe Weather Alert Day
METEOROLOGIST BRIAN HUTTON, JUNIOR, AS WE CONTINUE TRACKING ACTIVE WEATHER ROLLING ACROSS WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, WE DO HAVE ONE ACTIVE FLASH FLOOD WARNING, AS WELL AS ONE OF TWO ACTIVE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MINUTES. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT FLASH FLOOD WARNING. WARNING FIRST, AS HEAVY RAIN CONTINUES ROLLING ACROSS WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, THAT FLASH FLOOD WARNING STRETCHES ALL THE WAY FROM THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH, FROM SQUIRREL HILL OUT PAST CLYMER INTO PORTIONS OF INDIANA COUNTY. RAINFALL AMOUNTS GENERALLY ABOUT AN INCH OR SO IN THIS AREA, WITH SOME LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS, SO DO BE VERY CAREFUL OF FLOODING ON ROADWAYS HERE AS THE RAIN IS STILL FALLING FOR MANY SPOTS IN THIS LOCATION. SO AGAIN, JUST SOMETHING TO BE AWARE OF. TRY NOT TO CROSS FLOODED ROADWAYS AGAIN. IF YOU SEE WATER ON THE ROAD, TURN AROUND AND FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE. WE NOW HAVE A NEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE. THIS INCLUDES A FAR SOUTHERN PARTS OF INDIANA COUNTY, AS WELL AS EASTERN PORTIONS OF WESTMORELAND COUNTY. THIS GOES UNTIL 515. THIS IS BASICALLY MOVING UP THROUGH THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS FROM LIGONIER ALONG 711 AND 271 UP TOWARDS NEW FLORENCE SEWARD, EVENTUALLY CROSSING INTO CAMBRIA AND SOMERSET COUNTIES. THIS AGAIN IS A RAIN WIND AND SOME HAIL THREAT. THERE MAY BE SOME HAIL JUST TO THE WEST OF CALIFORNIA FURNACE. THERE, AS THAT’S MOVING EASTWARD AGAIN. THIS IS MOVING UP THOUGH, OVER TOP OF THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS. SO AGAIN, HEAVY RAIN THOUGH, AND GUSTY WINDS. STILL A CONCERN WITH THIS ONE. WE ALSO HAVE A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING THAT IS SET TO EXPIRE IN ABOUT 13 MINUTES. THIS INCLUDES PARTS OF WASHINGTON, FAYETTE AND GREENE COUNTIES. HEAVY RAIN FROM CALIFORNIA TO BROWNSVILLE, WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING BACK TOWARDS ELLSWORTH, DEEMSTON THIS IS CONTINUING TO SLIDE SOUTHEAST. WE’LL SEE IF THE WEATHER SERVICE EXTENDS THIS INTO FAYETTE COUNTY, BUT THIS DOES NOT LOOK AS STRONG AS IT WAS A LITTLE EARLIER, BACK WHEN IT WAS IN MORE CENTRAL PORTIONS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY. THE GOOD NEWS, IT APPEARS AS THESE STORMS CONTINUE ROLLING ACROSS THE AREA, THAT THIS LIKELY IS OUR MAIN BATCH OF SEVERE WEATHER FOR THE DAY. THERE ARE STILL SOME SHOWERS AND SOME STORMS BACK TO THE WEST OF THIS LINE, MOVING THROUGH PARTS OF BEAVER COUNTY, BUT THAT SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ALLOWED TO EXPIRE, SO WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON ANY STORMS AND RAIN THAT TRY TO FIRE NOW TO THE WEST AND SLIDE IN. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS LIKELY OUR MAIN SEVERE WEATHER FOR THE DAY. BUT AGAIN, ANYTIME YOU ARE SEEING LIGHTNING OR HEARING THUNDER, MAKE SURE YOU’RE HEADING INSIDE AND LET THESE STORMS PASS. I’LL BE WITH YOU ALL AFTERNOON LONG WITH UPDATES AS NEEDED. AND OF COURSE, IF YOU WANT TO CHECK RADAR ANYTIME AND ZO
