Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that a possible withdrawal from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CTOS) is still on his country’s agenda.
“I do not rule out that Armenia may take a decision to suspend or freeze its CSTO membership” if the organization fails to comply with its treaty obligations, Pashinyan told a news conference in Yerevan.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the CSTO’s reluctance to send a monitoring group to the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, he said that the CSTO membership has blocked his country’s opportunities to promote military cooperation with other nations, the news agency reports. Xinhua news.
The prime minister made the remarks days before his arranged talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Moscow after Russian mediation.
Azerbaijan and Armenia had been locked in a decades-long territorial conflict, with major armed clashes erupting in September 2020 and ending with a Russian-brokered truce in November of the same year.
Since then, sporadic conflicts have broken out between Baku and Yerevan, and international efforts are still ongoing to broker a fundamental truce between the two South Caucasian states.
The CSTO is an intergovernmental military alliance made up of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.
