Woman in Pakistan stoned to death after being brutally tortured for alleged adultery

A woman has been stoned to death in Pakistan’s Punjab province for allegedly committing adultery, police said Sunday.

The incident took place on Friday in the Rajanpur district of Punjab, some 500 kilometers from Lahore.

According to police, the woman’s husband, in his 20s, accused her of adultery. On Friday, the man along with her two brothers tied the woman to a tree and stoned her to death. Before stoning her, she was also brutally tortured.

The brothers fled after committing the crime and are believed to be hiding in the Punjab-Balochistan border region, police said.

The woman belonged to the Alkani tribe of Rajanpur.

Every year in Pakistan several women are killed in the name of honor.

According to human rights activists, each year around 1,000 women are killed in the name of honor in Pakistan. The victims are widely considered to have brought shame and dishonor to their families, either by marrying against their will or by having an affair. In most cases, family members are behind these murders.

A few days ago, a young female doctor was shot dead in the name of honor in the Mianwali district of Punjab.

According to the police, the 25-year-old doctor wanted to marry her colleague, but her father did not agree.

“More than a week ago, the doctor’s father came to her clinic in Mianwali city and argued with her about the matter. During the argument, he pulled out a gun and opened fire on her, seriously wounding her. She was rushed away to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said.
