‘Wordle’ today #537 hints, tips and answer for Thursday, December 8

Today’s Wordle is one that may stump even the most avid of players, but Newsweek is here to provide a helping hand.

The premise of the brainteaser is the same as always: one five-letter word per day and six attempts to guess it.

Each guess must be a valid five-letter word and the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word. If a letter is in the right place, the tile turns green. If it is in the wrong place, it turns yellow. But if the letter is not in the word at all, the tile goes gray.

Software engineer Josh Wardle began to work on Wordle in 2013, a play on the name of its creator.

It was finished during the COVID-19 lockdown, with help from Wardle’s partner Palak Shah. In the weeks after release online at the end of 2021, the puzzle was played by just a few dozen people a day.

But soon, it became a sensation that attracted millions of regular players and was ultimately acquired by The New York Times Company for an undisclosed sum.

Wardle previously told Newsweek that he liked the idea that “everyone around the world was trying to solve the exact same word at the exact same time.”

For some Wordle aficionados, the aim is not just to correctly guess the word of the day but to do so in as few tries as possible.

However, every now and then, they may come dangerously close to using up all their attempts and be no closer to the correct answer.

The answer resets every day, so players only have 24 hours to guess the day’s word and retain their Wordle win streak.

The limited number of guesses available means a good strategy is crucial. It’s always best to start with a vowel-rich word, say “audio,” or “adieu,” and avoid less common letters of the alphabet like X, Q and Z until you have a better sense of what the answer could be.

Why Are People Being Asked To Break Their ‘Wordle’ Streak Today?

Journalists and other employees at The New York Times are engaging in a one-day walkout on December 8 after the union and management failed to reach an agreement.

Members of the union have asked readers to break their Wordle win streaks as part of a “digital picket line” while workers stand on a real picket line at the Times office.
